Grade 8 STEM Students Build Impressive Rube Goldberg Chain Reactions βοΈπ‘
Engineering Teamwork in Action.
Grade 8 STEM students at Chippewa Jr./Sr. High School collaborated to connect their individual Rube Goldberg machines into one continuous chain reaction. Through hands-on experimentation with simple machines and energy transfers, students put the engineering design process to work.
Hands-on learning and inventive problem-solving took center stage in the Eighth Grade STEM classroom at Chippewa Jr./Sr. High School. Students recently tackled a challenging collaborative project, working together to link their individual Rube Goldberg machines into a single, seamless chain reaction.
The assignment required students to incorporate various simple machines while using potential and kinetic energy to transfer force from one project to the next. As they built and tested their designs, students explored the mechanics of systems and subsystems, discovering firsthand how each moving part must function in harmony for the overall machine to succeed.
Collaborative projects like this highlight the strength of hands-on learning in preparing Chipps for future problem-solving and critical thinking. Working through the engineering design process allowed students to test ideas, analyze failures, and refine their solutions as a team.
The classroom was filled with laughter and genuine excitement as students cheered on each successful transition from one machine to the next. That spirit of perseverance, joy in learning, and shared pride perfectly captures what it means to be a Chipp.
We are proud of our eighth graders for their creativity and dedication to working together. Be sure to ask your Grade 8 STEM student about their contribution to the chain reaction and stay tuned for more innovative projects from our science and technology classes.
